What it means
A short circuit is detected at the output of battery charger A. Charging operation may be stopped or limited.
How it works
Battery charger A supplies current to the vehicle's charging system through its output circuit. P0D23 sets when the monitored output is detected as shorted, so charging may be stopped or limited to protect the charger and wiring.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Downstream short circuit
- Internal short in charger output
Symptoms
- Charge status indicator shows fault
- Charging may not start or interrupts
- Slower-than-expected charge rate
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame and charging-system data to identify whether the short was detected at plug-in, during charging, or after an interruption.
- With charging stopped and following the vehicle's safety instructions, inspect charger A's output wiring and connectors for crushed insulation, moisture, scorching, or bridged terminals.
- Check for related output-circuit faults and determine whether the short is downstream of charger A or reported within the charger.
- Have the output circuit isolated and tested for an unintended short using the manufacturer's procedure; do not probe high-voltage connectors without the required training and equipment.
- If the downstream circuit tests sound, test battery charger A against the manufacturer's specification for an internal output short.
Common fixes
- Dry and clean a contaminated connector if the manufacturer's procedure permits.
- Repair or replace output wiring with damaged insulation or shorted terminals.
- Replace a damaged output connector or terminal.
- Replace battery charger A if testing confirms an internal short.
Can I keep driving?
Do not keep attempting to charge if the vehicle detects an output short, and do not touch or open high-voltage components. Arrange diagnosis before relying on the vehicle's charge; a short can damage wiring or the charger and may create a heat hazard.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
