What it means
The battery charger input circuit reports a range/performance condition. AC mains/EVSE input may be impaired.
How it works
The onboard charger monitors the incoming AC supply from the mains or EVSE to confirm it remains within the operating range needed for charging. P0D81 sets when that input behaves outside the expected range or performance, including instability or voltage drop across a high-resistance connection.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Unstable or out-of-range charger input
- High-resistance wiring or connection
Symptoms
- Charging may be limited or may stop
How to diagnose it
- Review charging-session data or freeze-frame information for input readings and note whether the fault occurs with one EVSE or at multiple charging locations.
- Confirm the EVSE is operating normally and compare results using a known-good supply compatible with the vehicle.
- Inspect accessible plugs, connectors, and input wiring for looseness, corrosion, discoloration, or heat damage.
- Have a qualified technician measure the charger input under load and compare it with the manufacturer's specification.
- If supply quality and connections are acceptable, test the onboard charger's input circuit for excessive resistance or an internal performance fault.
Common fixes
- Reseat the vehicle and EVSE connectors.
- Repair a high-resistance or heat-damaged input connection.
- Use a compatible EVSE or supply confirmed to provide stable input.
- Repair or replace the onboard charger if its input performance fails manufacturer testing.
Can I keep driving?
Charging may be limited or interrupted, so confirm the vehicle has enough charge before a trip. Stop using a plug or connector that becomes unusually hot and have the supply or vehicle input checked.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
