What it means
The HV battery temperature sensor N reports a circuit fault. Cell-group temperature monitoring impaired on this channel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Sensor N measures temperature at its assigned area of the high-voltage battery, and the control module uses the reading to manage battery protection, power, and charging. This code indicates a fault in the N sensor circuit; the fault may be in the sensor, its wiring, or its connector rather than a specific low or high signal condition.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Failed temperature sensor
- Open, shorted, or damaged wiring
- Loose or corroded connector
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and compare Sensor N's reading with nearby battery temperature channels to see whether it is missing, implausible, or inconsistent.
- With the vehicle powered down according to the manufacturer's procedure, inspect the Sensor N connector and wiring for looseness, corrosion, breaks, or insulation damage.
- Check Sensor N connector pins for corrosion or poor contact and confirm the connector is fully seated.
- Test the N sensor circuit for continuity and shorts using the manufacturer's procedure.
- Test Sensor N itself and, if it and the harness pass, check the control module input and connections.
Common fixes
- Reseat the Sensor N connector and clean or repair corroded terminals.
- Repair open, shorted, or damaged wiring in the Sensor N circuit.
- Replace Sensor N if it fails the manufacturer's test.
- Repair the module connection or replace the control module only if testing confirms an input fault.
Can I keep driving?
The vehicle may limit electric power or charging while Sensor N's battery temperature data is unavailable or unreliable. Avoid strenuous driving and follow any hybrid/EV warnings, especially instructions to stop.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
