OBD-II fault code

P0C88: Hybrid/EV Battery Temperature Sensor I Circuit

What it means

The HV battery temperature sensor I reports a circuit fault. Cell-group temperature monitoring impaired on this channel.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

HV battery temperature sensor I monitors the temperature of its assigned cell group and sends that reading to the battery management system. P0C88 indicates a general fault in the sensor I circuit, so the controller cannot rely on that channel; the cause may be the sensor, its wiring, or a pack condition affecting monitoring.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Temperature sensor failed
  2. Wiring fault
  3. Pack cell imbalance approaching service threshold

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a hybrid-capable scan tool to capture freeze-frame data and check whether sensor I reports a plausible temperature compared with nearby battery sensors.
  2. Inspect the sensor I connector and accessible wiring for looseness, corrosion, damage, or signs of a disturbed connection.
  3. With the high-voltage system made safe using the manufacturer's procedure, check the sensor I circuit connections and wiring against the manufacturer's diagram.
  4. Test sensor I and its circuit using the applicable manufacturer procedure to distinguish a failed sensor from a wiring fault.
  5. If the sensor I circuit passes, review battery cell-group data for imbalance or other pack conditions associated with the fault.

Common fixes

  • Reseat or clean a loose or corroded sensor I connection.
  • Repair damaged wiring in the sensor I circuit.
  • Replace sensor I if it fails the manufacturer's specified test.
  • Address any confirmed cell-group imbalance or battery-pack condition through the applicable service procedure.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid charging and strenuous driving while the hybrid warning or reduced-power mode is active, because the battery controller may have incomplete temperature information for the monitored cell group. Stop if power falls substantially or a battery-temperature warning appears.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
