What it means
The HV battery temperature sensor N reports a circuit low fault. Cell-group temperature monitoring impaired on this channel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Sensor N measures temperature at its assigned area of the high-voltage battery, and the control module uses that reading to manage battery protection, power, and charging. This code sets when the N sensor signal is lower than expected, commonly from a signal wire short to ground or an internally shorted sensor.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Internal sensor short
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and compare Sensor N's temperature with other battery channels; a fixed or unusually low reading helps isolate the N circuit.
- With the vehicle powered down using the manufacturer's procedure, inspect Sensor N wiring for chafing, crushed insulation, or contact with ground.
- Inspect the N connector pins for corrosion or damage that could affect the signal.
- Test the N signal circuit for a short to ground and test the sensor following the manufacturer's procedure.
- If the sensor and harness pass, check the control module's N input and connections.
Common fixes
- Clean or repair corroded Sensor N connector pins and secure the connector.
- Repair the damaged wire or insulation causing the N signal to short to ground.
- Replace Sensor N if it fails testing.
- Repair the module connection or replace the control module only if diagnosis confirms an input fault.
Can I keep driving?
A low or unreliable Sensor N reading can lead the vehicle to restrict power or charging to protect the battery. Avoid strenuous driving, and heed any stop warning or major loss of power.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
