OBD-II fault code

P0C89: Hybrid/EV Battery Temperature Sensor I Range/Performance

What it means

The HV battery temperature sensor I reports a range/performance fault. Cell-group temperature monitoring impaired on this channel.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

HV battery temperature sensor I tracks the temperature of its assigned cell group for the battery management system. P0C89 sets when the sensor I reading is outside the expected range or does not respond as expected, without identifying a specifically low or high electrical signal.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor characteristic drifted
  2. Sensor mounting displaced
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a hybrid-capable scan tool to record freeze-frame data and compare sensor I's temperature with adjacent battery sensors and ambient conditions.
  2. Watch sensor I live data during a controlled change in battery temperature or operating state for lag, implausible jumps, or a reading that does not track the pack.
  3. With the high-voltage system made safe according to the manufacturer's procedure, inspect sensor I's mounting, connector, and wiring for displacement, corrosion, or damage.
  4. Test sensor I's response and circuit against the manufacturer's temperature-sensor specifications.
  5. If the sensor and circuit pass, review pack temperature and cell-group data for an underlying condition affecting sensor I's assigned area.

Common fixes

  • Reposition sensor I if its mounting has shifted.
  • Repair or clean a damaged or corroded sensor I connection.
  • Replace sensor I if its temperature response is outside the manufacturer's specification.
  • Correct any confirmed battery-pack condition affecting the monitored cell group.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid charging or hard driving while the hybrid warning or reduced-power mode is active, because the controller may not be able to manage the monitored cell group's temperature reliably. Stop if the vehicle displays a battery-temperature warning or suffers significant power loss.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
