OBD-II fault code

P0B77: Hybrid/EV Battery Voltage Sense M Circuit

What it means

The BMS detects a circuit fault on voltage sense channel M of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The BMS uses voltage sense channel M to measure a battery cell group and sends that reading to the battery monitoring electronics. P0B77 sets when the channel M circuit has a detected fault, so the BMS cannot treat that group’s voltage reading as reliable.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open or short in the voltage-sense wiring
  2. Loose, corroded, or damaged connection
  3. Battery monitoring module fault

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare live readings for channel M with adjacent battery sense channels to determine whether M is missing, implausible, or disrupted.
  2. With the vehicle safely powered down under the manufacturer’s procedure, inspect the channel M sense harness and connector for loose seating, corrosion, damaged insulation, or broken wires.
  3. Check channel M connector pins for looseness or corrosion that could interrupt the signal or create resistance.
  4. Have a qualified hybrid technician test channel M wiring for opens and shorts using the manufacturer’s isolation and circuit-test procedure.
  5. If channel M wiring and connectors pass, check the battery monitoring module’s input and related readings for an internal fault.

Common fixes

  • Reseat or clean a loose or corroded channel M connector.
  • Repair an open, shorted, or physically damaged section of channel M wiring.
  • Restore a damaged connector or terminal so channel M has a secure electrical connection.
  • Repair or replace the battery monitoring module if tests isolate the fault to its channel M input.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid long trips and strenuous driving if the vehicle has reduced power or charging problems; it may limit output because the channel M cell-group voltage cannot be verified. Arrange prompt diagnosis and stop safely if the vehicle’s power becomes unpredictable.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
