What it means
The BMS detects a circuit low fault on voltage sense channel O of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The battery management system measures a cell-group voltage through sense channel O and checks that the signal remains within its expected range. P0B83 sets when channel O's signal is too low, leaving the BMS unable to trust that group's reported voltage.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sense wire shorted to ground
- Open in sense wire
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and compare channel O's live reading with adjacent cell-group readings to confirm the low signal and its operating context.
- Check for restricted charging or reduced propulsion and note whether these began when the channel O fault set.
- With the high-voltage battery safely isolated under the vehicle's service procedure, inspect channel O wiring and connector terminals for damage, corrosion, or moisture.
- Have a qualified hybrid technician check channel O for a short to ground, an open wire, or excessive contact resistance using the manufacturer's procedure.
- If wiring tests pass, compare the channel O input at the battery monitoring module with the actual group voltage to check for an input fault.
Common fixes
- Repair channel O sense wiring that is shorted to ground.
- Restore continuity in an open channel O sense wire.
- Clean or repair corroded channel O connector terminals and restore a sound connection.
- Replace or repair the battery monitoring module if its channel O input is faulty after harness checks.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid long trips because charging and propulsion may be limited while the BMS cannot verify channel O. If the vehicle enters limp mode or shows additional high-voltage battery warnings, stop safely and arrange qualified hybrid service.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
