OBD-II fault code

P0B6C: Hybrid/EV Battery Voltage Sense J Circuit Intermittent/Erratic

What it means

The BMS detects a circuit intermittent/erratic fault on voltage sense channel J of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The BMS monitors the voltage of a battery cell group through sense channel J. This code sets when channel J's reading changes erratically or drops in and out, rather than remaining stable enough for the BMS to use.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sense connector not seated
  2. Noisy ground reference
  3. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and review live channel J voltage for sudden jumps or dropouts, comparing it with adjacent channels.
  2. With the vehicle powered down under the manufacturer's high-voltage safety procedure, inspect the channel J connector for incomplete seating, corrosion, or damaged pins.
  3. Inspect the accessible channel J sense-wire harness for chafing, loose routing, or damage that could make contact intermittent with vibration.
  4. Have a qualified hybrid/EV technician check channel J connector retention and ground-reference integrity using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the connection and wiring are sound, have the BMS input checked for intermittent faults before replacing any module.

Common fixes

  • Reseat and secure the channel J connector.
  • Clean corroded channel J connector pins or repair damaged terminals.
  • Repair or replace a channel J harness section with an intermittent connection.
  • Repair a faulty ground reference or replace a BMS only after wiring checks identify the cause.

Can I keep driving?

An intermittent channel J reading can make the BMS limit drive power or interrupt charging without warning. Avoid long trips and hard acceleration until repaired, and stop safely if power drops suddenly or a stop warning appears.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
