What it means
The BMS detects a circuit intermittent/erratic fault on voltage sense channel O of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The battery management system monitors cell-group voltage through sense channel O and expects a stable signal. P0B85 sets when that signal becomes intermittent or erratic, preventing a dependable voltage reading for the monitored group.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sense connector not seated
- Noisy ground reference
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and review channel O live voltage for brief dropouts or jumps, comparing it with adjacent groups.
- Note whether the fault or warning appears during charging, after a temperature change, or over rough roads, which can point to an intermittent connection.
- With the high-voltage battery safely isolated under the vehicle's service procedure, check that the channel O connector is fully seated and inspect its terminals and ground reference.
- Have a qualified hybrid technician test channel O wiring and ground stability using the manufacturer's procedure, including checks for vibration-sensitive contact.
- If the circuit remains stable, assess the battery monitoring module for an intermittent channel O input.
Common fixes
- Reseat and secure the channel O sense connector.
- Clean or repair channel O terminals with intermittent or corroded contact.
- Repair damaged channel O wiring or an unstable ground reference.
- Replace or repair the battery monitoring module if channel O continues to drop out with stable connections.
Can I keep driving?
Drive only as needed because the intermittent channel O signal can trigger sudden power reduction or charging interruptions. Stop safely if propulsion becomes unreliable or additional high-voltage warnings appear.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
