OBD-II fault code

P0B4E: Hybrid/EV Battery Voltage Sense D Circuit Intermittent/Erratic

What it means

The BMS detects a circuit intermittent/erratic fault on voltage sense channel D of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The BMS tracks cell-group voltage on channel D and expects its signal to remain stable as operating conditions change. This code sets when the channel D signal becomes erratic or drops in and out, so the BMS cannot consistently trust that measurement.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Loose or corroded connector
  2. Damaged wiring with an intermittent connection
  3. Fault in the battery voltage-sensing module

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame and fault history, then watch channel D live data alongside adjacent groups to see whether its reading jumps or disappears.
  2. Inspect the accessible channel D harness and connectors, especially for chafing, moisture, corrosion, or a connector that is not fully seated.
  3. With the vehicle safely shut down as specified by the manufacturer, check channel D connector retention and wiring for an intermittent open.
  4. Have a qualified technician perform the manufacturer's harness movement or continuity checks on channel D while monitoring the signal for dropouts.
  5. If the circuit remains stable through testing, compare the sensing module's channel D input with scan data to check for an internal module fault.

Common fixes

  • Reseat and clean a loose or corroded channel D connector.
  • Repair chafed or damaged channel D wiring causing intermittent contact.
  • Replace terminals or connector components that cannot maintain a secure connection.
  • Repair or replace the sensing module if channel D continues to drop out with verified wiring.

Can I keep driving?

Drive only as needed to reach a safe place or repair facility, and avoid trips that depend on consistent hybrid or EV power; the fault may trigger reduced power or limp mode without warning. Intermittent readings can also disrupt charging or reduce electric range.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
