What it means
The BMS detects a circuit intermittent/erratic fault on voltage sense channel N of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The battery management system monitors the cell-group voltage signal on sense channel N for stability. P0B80 sets when that signal becomes erratic or intermittent, so the BMS cannot consistently rely on the reported voltage.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sense connector not seated
- Noisy ground reference
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and review channel N live voltage for sudden jumps or dropouts, comparing it with adjacent groups and noting when the fault appeared.
- Check whether the warning or power limitation changes with charging, road vibration, or temperature, as this can help reproduce an intermittent channel N fault.
- With the high-voltage battery safely isolated under the vehicle's service procedure, inspect channel N's connector seating, terminals, and ground reference for looseness, corrosion, or damage.
- Have a qualified hybrid technician check channel N wiring and ground stability while following the manufacturer's procedure for safe harness movement and measurement.
- If the connection and wiring remain stable, assess the battery monitoring module's channel N reading for intermittent input faults.
Common fixes
- Seat and secure a loose channel N sense connector.
- Clean or repair channel N terminals with corrosion or poor contact.
- Repair an unstable channel N ground reference or damaged wiring.
- Replace or repair the battery monitoring module if channel N remains intermittent with sound wiring and connections.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving because an intermittent reading can trigger reduced power or interrupt charging without warning. If the vehicle enters limp mode, loses propulsion, or shows further battery warnings, stop safely and arrange hybrid-system service.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
