What it means
The BMS detects a circuit intermittent/erratic fault on voltage sense channel M of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The BMS monitors the stability of the cell-group voltage signal from battery sense channel M. P0B7B sets when that signal becomes intermittent or erratic, such as when a loose connection or unstable reference makes the reading jump or drop out.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sense connector not seated
- Noisy ground reference
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and graph channel M voltage beside adjacent channels to spot dropouts or sudden jumps around the time the fault occurred.
- Inspect the channel M connector and harness for incomplete seating, damaged terminals, corrosion, or movement that could interrupt the signal.
- Check channel M connector retention and pin contact; vibration can expose an intermittent connection that is not obvious during a stationary visual check.
- Have a qualified hybrid technician test channel M wiring continuity and ground reference using the manufacturer’s procedure and required high-voltage isolation.
- If the external circuit remains stable, investigate the battery monitoring module’s channel M input for intermittent operation.
Common fixes
- Fully seat and secure the channel M connector.
- Clean or repair loose, corroded, or damaged channel M terminals.
- Repair damaged channel M wiring or a noisy ground reference confirmed by circuit testing.
- Repair or replace the battery monitoring module if its channel M input is confirmed intermittent.
Can I keep driving?
Keep driving limited and avoid hard acceleration or relying on charging while the fault is active, since an erratic channel M reading can cause sudden power limits or charging interruptions. Arrange prompt diagnosis, especially if power changes unexpectedly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
