What it means
The BMS detects a circuit intermittent/erratic fault on voltage sense channel E of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The BMS expects a steady cell-group voltage signal from channel E, while allowing for normal changes in battery operation. This code sets when channel E's signal becomes intermittent or erratic, so the BMS cannot depend on that reading.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Loose or corroded connector
- Damaged wiring with an intermittent connection
- Fault in the battery voltage-sensing module
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame and fault history, then compare channel E live data with adjacent groups to identify dropouts or sudden jumps.
- Inspect the accessible channel E wiring and connectors for chafing, corrosion, moisture, or a loose fit.
- With the vehicle shut down as specified by the manufacturer, check channel E terminals for secure retention and signs of intermittent contact.
- Have a qualified technician use the manufacturer's procedure to check channel E continuity while monitoring for signal changes during harness movement.
- If wiring and connectors remain stable, compare the module's channel E input with scan data to assess an internal sensing fault.
Common fixes
- Reseat and clean the channel E connector if it is loose or corroded.
- Repair damaged channel E wiring that intermittently opens.
- Replace channel E terminals or connector parts that cannot hold a reliable connection.
- Repair or replace the voltage-sensing module if channel E remains erratic with sound wiring.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid longer trips if the hybrid or EV system is losing power or charging inconsistently; channel E may drop out again and trigger limp mode. Arrange diagnosis promptly because the BMS cannot reliably monitor that cell group.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
