OBD-II fault code

P0ABF: Hybrid/EV Battery Pack Current Sensor A Circuit

What it means

The ECM detects a circuit fault on the hybrid/ev battery pack current sensor a circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Hybrid battery current sensor A measures current flowing into or out of the battery pack so the control system can manage battery operation and charging. P0ABF sets when the module detects a fault in sensor A's circuit, making its current reading unreliable; wiring, the sensor, or the battery control module may be responsible.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Fault in current-sensor wiring or connector
  2. Failed battery pack current sensor
  3. Fault in the battery control module

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan hybrid and battery modules, save freeze-frame data, and check for companion codes involving battery current, voltage, or communication.
  2. Review live data for current sensor A and compare its reading with the vehicle's operating state and related battery data.
  3. With the high-voltage system isolated using the manufacturer's procedure, inspect accessible sensor A wiring and connectors for looseness, damage, or corrosion.
  4. Use the wiring diagram to test the current-sensor A circuit for opens, shorts, and poor connections against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the circuit passes, follow the manufacturer's tests to determine whether sensor A or the battery control module is faulty.

Common fixes

  • Secure a loose current-sensor A connector.
  • Repair damaged or corroded sensor A wiring and terminals.
  • Replace battery current sensor A if the specified test confirms it has failed.
  • Repair or replace the battery control module only if testing identifies it as the cause.

Can I keep driving?

Reduced power, limited hybrid operation, or charging problems may occur, so avoid long trips and routes where sudden loss of assistance would be hazardous. Do not open or probe high-voltage battery wiring; stop safely if power is severely limited.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
