OBD-II fault code

P0A5E: Drive Motor A Phase U Current Low

What it means

Drive motor A phase U current is below the expected range. The code identifies a low-current condition but does not establish its cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Drive motor A phase U is one of the inverter-controlled traction-motor current paths. P0A5E sets when measured current in phase U is below the expected range, which can indicate a weak phase path or a biased current measurement.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Phase winding partially open
  2. Current sensor offset drifted

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced motor power or torque
  • Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare live phase U current with commanded motor operation and phases V and W to confirm the low reading.
  2. With the vehicle made safe under the manufacturer's high-voltage procedure, inspect drive motor A phase U wiring and connectors for damage, looseness, or overheating.
  3. Check for related motor or inverter codes and note whether reduced torque occurs during acceleration, regeneration, or both.
  4. Test the phase U current sensor and its wiring against the manufacturer's procedure to determine whether the reading is biased low.
  5. If the sensing circuit passes, have the phase U winding checked for a partial open using the manufacturer's motor diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Secure or repair loose or damaged phase U wiring and connector terminals.
  • Replace a phase U current sensor confirmed to have offset drift.
  • Repair drive motor A if testing confirms a partially open phase U winding.
  • Confirm phase U current follows commanded operation after repair.

Can I keep driving?

Reduced motor torque or limp mode may occur, and the vehicle may shut down if the fault worsens. Avoid high-demand driving and stop safely if power falls or hybrid warnings escalate.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
