OBD-II fault code

P0A5D: Drive Motor A Phase U Current

What it means

The control module detected a fault associated with drive motor A phase U current. The code alone does not identify whether the cause is in the current measurement circuit, inverter, or motor.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Drive motor A is a traction motor whose inverter controls current in three phases; phase U is one of those current paths. P0A5D sets when the control module detects a fault associated with phase U current, but the code alone does not distinguish a measurement fault from an inverter, wiring, or motor problem.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Phase current sensor failed
  2. Wiring fault

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced motor power or torque
  • Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and read hybrid fault details and live phase-current data to see when the phase U fault occurs and whether it accompanies other motor or inverter codes.
  2. With the vehicle made safe under the manufacturer's high-voltage procedure, visually inspect drive motor A phase U wiring and connectors for damage, looseness, or signs of overheating.
  3. Compare phase U current with phases V and W during the conditions allowed by the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure to identify whether the fault is isolated to U.
  4. Test the phase U current-sensing circuit and its wiring for continuity or connection faults using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If wiring checks pass, have the inverter and drive motor A phase U path tested to distinguish a failed sensor from an inverter or motor fault.

Common fixes

  • Secure or repair damaged phase U wiring and connector terminals.
  • Repair a confirmed phase U current-sensor circuit fault.
  • Repair or replace the inverter if testing identifies a fault in its phase U current path.
  • Repair drive motor A if testing confirms an internal phase U fault.

Can I keep driving?

Drive motor power may be limited, and the vehicle could enter limp mode or shut down. Avoid driving if torque is reduced, warnings escalate, or shutdown seems possible; stop safely and arrange hybrid-system diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
