What it means
Drive motor B phase V current is below the expected range. The code identifies a low-current condition but does not establish its cause.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The inverter controls current through drive motor B’s phase V winding to generate torque. The module compares measured phase V current with the expected value and sets this code when it is too low, which can result from a partly open winding or a current sensor whose offset has drifted.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Phase winding partially open
- Current sensor offset drifted
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced motor power or torque
- Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and compare live motor B phase V current with phases U and W under similar operating conditions.
- With the vehicle safely powered down according to the manufacturer’s procedure, inspect motor B phase V wiring and connectors for looseness, corrosion, heat damage, or chafing.
- Check for related motor B, inverter, and current-sensor codes that could point to a broader electrical fault.
- Have the motor B phase V winding and its connections checked for an open or excessive resistance against the manufacturer’s specification.
- If the winding and wiring pass, test the phase V current sensor and signal circuit for an offset or measurement error.
Common fixes
- Repair a loose, damaged, or corroded phase V connector or wire.
- Repair an open or damaged motor B phase V winding if confirmed.
- Correct the phase V current-sensor circuit or replace the sensor if it fails testing.
- Repair or replace the inverter only if testing confirms it is responsible for the low reading.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if torque is reduced or limp mode activates, and stop safely if the vehicle displays a shutdown warning because propulsion may be limited or lost. Continued operation with a winding fault can cause further damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
