What it means
Drive motor A phase W current is below the expected range. The code identifies a low-current condition but does not establish its cause.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Drive motor A uses three phase windings, including phase W, and the inverter controls current through them to produce torque. The module compares measured phase W current with the expected current; this code sets when motor A phase W current is too low.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Phase winding partially open
- Current sensor offset drifted
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced motor power or torque
- Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and check live motor A phase currents under the conditions that set the code, comparing phase W with phases U and V.
- With the vehicle safely powered down according to the manufacturer’s procedure, inspect the motor A phase W wiring and connectors for looseness, corrosion, heat damage, or chafing.
- Check for related inverter, motor, or current-sensor codes that could explain why phase W current is low.
- Have the phase W winding and its connections checked for an open or excessive resistance against the manufacturer’s specification.
- If the winding and wiring pass, test the motor A phase W current sensor and its signal circuit for offset or measurement error.
Common fixes
- Repair a loose, damaged, or corroded phase W connector or wire.
- Repair an open or damaged motor A phase W winding if confirmed.
- Correct a phase W current-sensor offset or replace the sensor if testing confirms it has drifted.
- Repair or replace the inverter only if testing isolates the fault there.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if torque is reduced, the vehicle enters limp mode, or a shutdown warning appears; loss of drive power may leave you unable to keep pace with traffic. Arrange prompt diagnosis, since continued operation with an electrical or winding fault can worsen damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
