OBD-II fault code

P0A5C: Generator Current Sensor Circuit High

What it means

The current sensor of the generator reports a circuit high fault. Current measurement is unreliable.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The generator current sensor reports generator current to the hybrid control module. P0A5C sets when the signal is higher than the expected range, so the module cannot trust the measured current.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to B+
  2. Open sensor
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or hybrid-system warning light
  • Reduced hybrid performance
  • Possible reduced-power mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and inspect live generator-current data to determine whether the high signal is continuous or tied to a particular operating condition.
  2. With the vehicle powered down using the manufacturer's safety procedure, inspect the sensor connector and signal wire for damage, a loose connection, or contact with a B+ feed.
  3. Check connector pins for corrosion and poor fit, which can disrupt the sensor signal.
  4. Test the signal circuit for a short to B+ and check continuity according to the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the wiring and connector are sound, check the sensor for an internal open before replacing it.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose connector terminals.
  • Repair a signal wire shorted to B+ and restore its insulation and routing.
  • Replace a current sensor confirmed to be open.
  • Verify generator-current data returns to a plausible range after repair.

Can I keep driving?

The hybrid system may reduce power or enter reduced-power mode because it cannot rely on generator-current data. Avoid hard acceleration and stop safely if power becomes restricted or a hybrid warning appears.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
