What it means
Drive motor A phase U current is above the expected range. The code identifies a high-current condition but does not establish its cause.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Drive motor A phase U carries one part of the traction motor's inverter-controlled current. P0A5F sets when phase U current exceeds the expected range, which may reflect an excessive phase current or a fault affecting how that current is produced or measured.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Short between motor phases
- Rotor stalled - high stall current
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced motor power or torque
- Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and compare phase U current with commanded torque and phases V and W to establish when the high reading occurs.
- With the vehicle made safe under the manufacturer's high-voltage procedure, inspect drive motor A and inverter phase wiring and connectors for damage, loose connections, or overheating.
- Check for related inverter or motor codes and look for conditions suggesting the motor is stalled when the high current is recorded.
- Test the phase U current-sensing circuit and wiring using the manufacturer's procedure to rule out an erroneous reading.
- If the measurement circuit passes, have the inverter and motor phases checked for a short between phases or a mechanical stall.
Common fixes
- Repair damaged or loose phase wiring and connector terminals.
- Correct a confirmed motor stall or binding condition.
- Repair the inverter or motor if testing confirms a short between phases.
- Replace a phase U current sensor only if testing confirms it is reporting incorrectly.
Can I keep driving?
High phase current can trigger reduced power or shutdown and may worsen damage to the inverter or motor. Avoid driving under load; if the vehicle loses torque or warns of a hybrid fault, stop safely and arrange diagnosis.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
