OBD-II fault code

P08BE: Pressure Control Solenoid L Intermittent

What it means

Pressure control solenoid L shows intermittent electrical or hydraulic faults. Loose connector or marginal coil.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Pressure control solenoid L adjusts transmission hydraulic pressure in response to TCM commands. P08BE sets when the electrical or hydraulic response from L comes and goes, often because a connector loses contact under vibration or the coil changes behaviour with temperature.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Solenoid connector not fully seated
  2. Coil resistance drifts with temperature
  3. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan for transmission codes and review freeze-frame data to see whether the fault appeared during a particular temperature or driving condition.
  2. Monitor solenoid L command and response on a scan tool while checking whether the fault returns as the transmission warms or the harness moves.
  3. Inspect the solenoid L connector for incomplete seating, loose pin fit, corrosion, or fluid intrusion, and check the harness for chafing.
  4. Measure solenoid L coil resistance cold and warm, comparing readings with the manufacturer’s specification to look for temperature-related drift.
  5. If the electrical connection remains stable, assess solenoid L and its hydraulic circuit for intermittent sticking or pressure loss.

Common fixes

  • Fully seat and secure the solenoid L connector.
  • Repair corroded terminals or wiring that loses contact with vibration.
  • Replace solenoid L if its coil becomes intermittent or out of specification when warm.
  • Repair a sticking solenoid or restricted hydraulic passage if testing identifies an intermittent hydraulic fault.

Can I keep driving?

Reduce driving if the fault causes slipping, harsh or missing shifts, or limp mode; an intermittent return of pressure control can leave the transmission shifting unpredictably and may cause damage. Stop if safe gear changes are not possible.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
