P08B9: Clutch Pedal Position Sensor A/B Correlation

What it means

The signals of clutch pedal position sensors A and B do not correlate within the calibrated tolerance.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The clutch pedal has two position signals that the transmission control module (TCM) compares to verify pedal movement. P08B9 sets when sensors A and B disagree beyond the calibrated tolerance, so the module cannot reliably determine the pedal position.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. One sensor characteristic drifted
  2. Harness incorrectly swapped

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan for related transmission codes and review freeze-frame data to see when the A/B disagreement occurred.
  2. Watch both clutch pedal position signals on a scan tool while slowly pressing and releasing the pedal; note whether one signal lags, jumps, or changes differently from the other.
  3. Inspect both sensor connectors and the harness for damage, loose pins, corrosion, or signs that the A and B circuits were swapped.
  4. Check sensor mounting and pedal linkage for looseness or interference that could make the two sensors track differently.
  5. Test each sensor and its wiring against the vehicle’s wiring diagram and manufacturer’s specification to identify drift, an open, or a swapped connection.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or correctly route swapped A/B sensor circuits.
  • Repair loose, damaged, or corroded sensor connectors and wiring.
  • Secure or adjust sensor mounting and pedal linkage as specified by the manufacturer.
  • Replace the drifting clutch pedal position sensor identified by testing.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if shifts are harsh, delayed, slipping, or unavailable, or if the transmission is in limp mode; the vehicle may become difficult to control and continued slipping can damage the transmission. Arrange repair before relying on it.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
