P08B2: Neutral Position Sensor A/B Correlation

What it means

The signals of the neutral position sensors A and B do not correlate within the calibrated tolerance.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Neutral position sensors A and B provide separate signals that the transmission control module compares to confirm position. This code sets when their readings disagree beyond the allowed correlation, even if either signal appears plausible on its own.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. One sensor characteristic drifted
  2. Harness incorrectly swapped

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame and live data for sensors A and B together to see which signal disagrees and in which transmission position.
  2. Inspect both sensor connectors and harness routing for swapped connectors, repairs, or wiring changes that could have crossed the A and B channels.
  3. With the vehicle safely stationary, select the available transmission positions and compare both sensor readings for consistent, coordinated changes.
  4. Check each sensor’s wiring and connections against the vehicle wiring diagram and manufacturer’s specification.
  5. If wiring is correct, test both sensors for output across their operating range to identify a sensor whose response has drifted.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect swapped A and B harness connectors correctly, if confirmed by the wiring diagram.
  • Repair wiring or connector faults affecting either sensor channel.
  • Replace the sensor whose output has drifted out of correlation.
  • Complete any required sensor calibration or relearn.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving if shifts are harsh, delayed, or slipping, or if the transmission enters limp mode; conflicting position signals can lead the module to restrict shifting. Arrange diagnosis soon even if the vehicle still moves normally.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
