What it means
The neutral position sensor B reports a circuit low fault. Verification of true neutral position on the B channel is impaired.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Neutral position sensor B provides the transmission control module with a signal used to confirm that the transmission is in neutral. This code sets when the B-channel circuit voltage falls below the module’s expected range, so the module cannot reliably verify neutral.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Position sensor failed
- Wiring fault
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and transmission live data to see when sensor B went low and whether the reported neutral state changes with gear selection.
- With the vehicle safely parked, inspect sensor B’s connector and wiring for corrosion, damage, loose terminals, or a short to ground.
- Check the sensor B supply, ground, and signal circuit against the wiring diagram and manufacturer’s specification.
- Monitor the B-channel signal while selecting neutral and other positions, comparing its response with sensor A if available.
- If the wiring and connections pass inspection, test sensor B and its circuit under the manufacturer’s procedure to distinguish a failed sensor from a harness fault.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded or loose sensor B connector terminals.
- Repair damaged wiring or a short to ground in the sensor B circuit.
- Replace a faulty neutral position sensor B.
- Perform any required neutral-position relearn after repair.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if shifts are harsh, delayed, slipping, or the transmission is stuck in one gear; loss of reliable neutral detection can cause unexpected shift behavior. If it shifts normally, limit driving and arrange diagnosis soon.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
