OBD-II fault code

P08A9: Clutch Pedal Position Sensor A Circuit Low

What it means

The clutch pedal position sensor A reports a circuit low fault. Pedal position cannot be measured reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Clutch pedal position sensor A sends a signal representing pedal travel to the control module. This code sets when the sensor A signal is lower than the module’s calibrated range, which can result from a sensor fault, wiring problem, or high resistance at corroded connector pins.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor failed
  2. Wiring fault
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check live sensor A data with the clutch pedal released and pressed to confirm the signal remains abnormally low.
  2. Inspect sensor A’s connector and wiring for corrosion, moisture, loose terminals, chafing, or damage that could pull down the signal.
  3. Check the sensor circuit’s supply, ground, and signal path for shorts to ground or excessive resistance, following the vehicle wiring diagram.
  4. Measure voltage at the sensor and at the control-module end of the circuit under the manufacturer’s test conditions to locate any wiring voltage drop.
  5. If the circuit and connector are sound, test sensor A’s output through pedal travel against the manufacturer’s specification.

Common fixes

  • Clean or replace corroded sensor A connector terminals and ensure a secure connection.
  • Repair wiring shorted to ground or showing excessive resistance.
  • Replace clutch pedal position sensor A if its output remains too low with a sound circuit.
  • Clear the code and verify the signal rises and changes correctly as the pedal moves.

Can I keep driving?

A low sensor A signal can interfere with clutch-related control or gear changes, so avoid driving if shifts are unreliable. Stop if the vehicle cannot select gears safely; repeated shifting problems can leave you stranded or strain the transmission.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
