What it means
The transmission control module monitors the electrical signal from transmission fluid pressure sensor/switch H. It sets this code when the signal is irregular or cuts in and out instead of remaining consistent.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Transmission pressure sensor/switch H provides hydraulic pressure feedback to the transmission controller during shift control. P084E sets when the H circuit signal becomes irregular or cuts in and out, making pressure feedback unreliable at those moments.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Connector not seated
- Harness chafing intermittently
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and monitor live H sensor data, noting whether dropouts coincide with vibration, movement, or a shift event.
- Inspect sensor H's connector for a loose fit, damaged lock, moisture, or terminals that do not grip securely.
- Trace the H wiring for chafing, pinching, or damage that could cause an intermittent open or short.
- Monitor the H signal while gently moving the harness and connector to check for dropouts.
- If the fault remains, test the H sensor and circuit against the manufacturer's wiring diagram and specifications.
Common fixes
- Reseat and secure the H connector.
- Repair chafed or damaged wiring in the H circuit.
- Clean or repair terminals that lose contact intermittently.
- Replace sensor/switch H if testing confirms an intermittent internal fault.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid towing and unnecessary driving if the signal dropout causes harsh, delayed, or slipping shifts; the transmission may enter limp mode or suffer damage from continued slipping. Stop if it cannot engage or hold a gear.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
