What it means
The transmission fluid pressure sensor/switch H signal is outside the expected range or does not perform as expected.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Transmission pressure sensor/switch H provides pressure feedback that the transmission controller checks against expected operating behavior. P084B sets when the H signal is present but falls outside the expected range or does not respond as expected; it does not identify the hydraulic passage monitored by H.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor offset drifted
- Aerated fluid affects pressure
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and review live H sensor data during the conditions that set the code, looking for readings that do not track operating changes.
- Check the transmission fluid level and condition using the vehicle's specified procedure, since low or aerated fluid can distort pressure feedback.
- Inspect sensor H's connector and wiring for looseness, corrosion, chafing, or other faults that could skew the signal.
- Compare the H signal with related transmission data and commanded shifts to determine whether the issue is isolated to that channel.
- Test sensor H and its circuit against the manufacturer's specifications to distinguish sensor drift from wiring or pressure-related causes.
Common fixes
- Correct the fluid level or fluid condition if it is outside the manufacturer's requirements.
- Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged H circuit connection.
- Replace sensor/switch H if testing confirms its signal is out of calibration.
- Recheck live data and shifting after the repair.
Can I keep driving?
Drive only as needed and avoid towing or hard acceleration if shifts are delayed, harsh, or slipping; inaccurate H pressure feedback can trigger limp mode and continued slipping can damage the transmission. Stop if the transmission loses a gear or slips severely.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
