OBD-II fault code

P0996: Transmission Fluid Pressure Sensor/Switch F Circuit Intermittent

What it means

The control module detects an intermittent fault in the transmission fluid pressure sensor/switch F circuit.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Transmission pressure sensor/switch F reports hydraulic pressure information to the control module, which uses it to check transmission operation. This code sets when the module detects an intermittent electrical fault in sensor/switch F's circuit, so the signal may cut in and out rather than stay consistently wrong.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Connector not seated
  2. Harness chafing intermittently
  3. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save the freeze-frame data and check transmission live data for pressure-signal dropouts, especially around the time the fault occurred.
  2. Inspect sensor/switch F's connector for a loose fit, damaged latch, moisture, corrosion, or pins that do not grip securely.
  3. Follow the sensor/switch F harness and look for chafing, stretched sections, heat damage, or places where vibration could pull the wiring.
  4. With the wiring diagram and manufacturer's procedure, monitor the circuit while gently moving the harness and connector to reproduce an intermittent open or poor contact.
  5. If the wiring and connections remain sound, test sensor/switch F and its circuit against the manufacturer's specifications before considering a control-module fault.

Common fixes

  • Reseat and secure the sensor/switch F connector.
  • Repair chafed or damaged wiring in the sensor/switch F circuit.
  • Clean or repair loose, corroded, or damaged connector terminals.
  • Replace sensor/switch F if testing confirms it is intermittent.
  • Repair or replace the control module only if circuit and sensor tests identify it as the cause.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid towing, hard acceleration, and unnecessary trips if shifts are erratic or the transmission enters limp mode. A pressure signal that drops out can lead to poor shifting or slipping, which may worsen transmission damage.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
