OBD-II fault code

P084D: Transmission Fluid Pressure Sensor/Switch H Circuit High

What it means

The transmission fluid pressure sensor/switch H circuit signal is above the expected level.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Transmission pressure sensor/switch H sends an electrical signal to the transmission controller for pressure feedback during shifts. P084D sets when the H circuit signal is higher than expected, which can happen if the signal wire contacts battery voltage, the sensor circuit is open, or connector contact is poor.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to B+
  2. Open sensor
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and inspect live H sensor data to see whether the high reading is constant or linked to movement or a particular operating condition.
  2. Inspect sensor H's connector for corrosion, loose terminals, or an open connection, and trace the harness for a signal wire touching a power feed.
  3. Use the manufacturer's wiring diagram to check the H signal circuit for a short to battery voltage or an open.
  4. Check the sensor's supply, ground, and signal wiring as applicable, comparing results with the manufacturer's specifications.
  5. If the circuit is intact, test sensor/switch H for an internal open or failure.

Common fixes

  • Repair a signal wire shorted to battery voltage.
  • Restore an open or loose connection in the H circuit.
  • Repair corroded or damaged connector terminals.
  • Replace sensor/switch H if testing confirms it is open or faulty.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid towing and limit driving if shifts are harsh, delayed, or slipping, since the high H signal can disrupt shift control and may lead to limp mode. Stop if the transmission slips severely or will not select a gear.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
