OBD-II fault code

P084F: Park/Neutral Switch Output Circuit

What it means

The park/neutral switch output circuit reports a generic fault. Selector position cannot be reliably reported to consumers.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The park/neutral switch output circuit reports selector-position information to vehicle systems that need to know whether Park or Neutral is selected. P084F sets when the output circuit has a fault, such as a failed switch contact or wiring problem, and that position information cannot be relied on.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Switch contact failed
  2. Wiring fault

Symptoms

  • The vehicle may not start in the expected selector positions
  • Transmission warning light may be on

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check scan-tool selector-position or park/neutral status while moving the selector through its positions with the vehicle secured.
  2. Confirm whether the engine starts only in the expected positions, keeping the parking brake applied and the vehicle safely restrained.
  3. Inspect the park/neutral switch output connector and wiring for looseness, corrosion, damage, or an open circuit.
  4. Check switch output operation and circuit continuity in each specified selector position using the manufacturer's wiring diagram.
  5. If wiring and alignment are correct, test the switch contacts against the manufacturer's specifications.

Common fixes

  • Reseat a loose park/neutral switch output connector.
  • Repair damaged or corroded output circuit wiring.
  • Adjust the switch if the manufacturer's procedure confirms misalignment.
  • Replace the switch if its output contacts fail testing.

Can I keep driving?

Do not rely on the vehicle's normal start interlock if it starts in an unexpected selector position; keep the brake applied and have the fault addressed promptly. Avoid driving if the selected gear is not reported reliably, since the vehicle could move unexpectedly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
