OBD-II fault code

P084C: Transmission Fluid Pressure Sensor/Switch H Circuit Low

What it means

The transmission fluid pressure sensor/switch H circuit signal is below the expected level.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Transmission pressure sensor/switch H sends an electrical signal used by the transmission controller for pressure feedback during shift control. P084C sets when that signal is lower than the expected range, which can result from a short to ground, an internally shorted sensor, or poor terminal contact.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to ground
  2. Internal sensor short
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check live H sensor data to confirm whether the low reading is steady or began under a particular condition.
  2. Inspect sensor H's connector for corrosion, bent terminals, or poor contact, and check the harness for a signal wire rubbed through to ground.
  3. Use the manufacturer's wiring diagram to identify the H signal circuit and check for a short to ground.
  4. Check sensor H's supply, ground, and signal circuit as applicable, comparing measurements with the manufacturer's specifications.
  5. If the wiring and terminals are sound, test sensor/switch H itself for an internal short.

Common fixes

  • Repair a signal wire shorted to ground.
  • Clean or repair corroded or loose H connector terminals.
  • Replace sensor/switch H if it is confirmed internally shorted.
  • Clear the code and confirm the H signal returns to the expected range.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving if shifting is abnormal, and avoid towing or hard acceleration; the low H signal may lead to harsh shifts or limp mode, and slipping can cause further damage. Stop if the transmission cannot engage or hold a gear.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
