What it means
Same as P0707 with intermittent or erratic signal. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Transmission range sensor A reports the selected gear position to the transmission control module. P0709 sets when that signal becomes intermittent or erratic, so the module cannot reliably match the sensor reading to the selector position.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Intermittent contact at connector
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
- Harness routed against vibrating component
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame and stored transmission data, then watch the live range reading while moving the selector to see whether sensor A briefly drops out.
- With the vehicle safely secured, compare the range reading with each shifter position and note any flicker or sudden change.
- Inspect sensor A's connector and harness for loose terminals, corrosion, chafing, or routing that lets the harness touch a vibrating component.
- Monitor the range signal while gently flexing the harness and connector to locate a vibration-sensitive interruption.
- If no wiring fault appears, test sensor A and its adjustment according to the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Secure the harness away from vibrating or rubbing components.
- Clean and reseat a connector with intermittent contact.
- Repair chafed wiring or replace loose, corroded, or damaged terminals.
- Adjust or replace transmission range sensor A if the signal remains erratic with sound wiring.
Can I keep driving?
If gear selection is consistent, keep driving to a minimum and avoid long trips until the intermittent signal is found. Stop driving if the gear indication changes unexpectedly, shifts become harsh or delayed, or the transmission slips, since the fault can interrupt reliable gear selection.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
