What it means
Same as P0707 with the signal voltage above the plausible range. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Transmission range sensor A tells the transmission control module which gear the driver selected. P0708 sets when sensor A's signal rises above the module's valid range, often because the signal is shorted to a power supply or a connector contact is failing.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal shorted to supply
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Supply wire pinched against B+ source
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and compare the scan tool's range reading with the shifter position to identify when sensor A reports an implausible gear.
- With the vehicle safely parked, move the selector through its positions and watch for a range reading that is stuck or inconsistent.
- Inspect sensor A's connector seals, pins, and harness for water entry, corrosion, pin push-back, or wiring pinched against a powered circuit.
- Using the wiring diagram, check the sensor A signal circuit for a short to supply and verify its connections while gently moving the harness if the fault is intermittent.
- If the wiring and connector are sound, test sensor A and its adjustment against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Dry, clean, and reseat a connector with water ingress or poor contact, and replace damaged seals as needed.
- Repair a signal wire shorted to a supply circuit or pinched against a powered wire.
- Replace corroded or pushed-back connector terminals that cannot be secured.
- Adjust or replace transmission range sensor A if it fails testing.
Can I keep driving?
If the gear display and shifting remain normal, limit driving to necessary short trips while arranging diagnosis. Do not continue if the indicated gear is wrong, shifts are harsh or delayed, or the transmission slips; an incorrect range signal can affect gear selection and lead to further transmission damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
