What it means
Range sensor B reports a position that does not match other plausibility checks. Mechanical alignment off or sensor contacts intermittent.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Range sensor B supplies one of the selector-position signals used to check which gear range is selected. P2801 sets when its reported position falls outside the expected relationship or plausibility window, even if the signal is present rather than simply low or high.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor mechanically misadjusted
- Contacts dirty or oxidised
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and compare the scan-tool range and B-channel readings with the selector position at the time of the fault.
- Move the selector through each position while watching live data for an offset, inconsistent, or unstable B-channel reading.
- Inspect the range sensor mounting and linkage for movement or misadjustment, then check the connector contacts for dirt or oxidation.
- Check the B-channel wiring for intermittent opens, shorts, or excess resistance using the manufacturer’s wiring information.
- Test the sensor contacts and alignment through the full selector travel against the manufacturer’s specification.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure dirty or oxidised range sensor B contacts.
- Adjust the sensor if its alignment is outside the specified position.
- Repair damaged or high-resistance B-channel wiring or connector terminals.
- Replace the range sensor if its contacts remain outside the calibration window after alignment and circuit checks.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving if the range display is wrong, shifting becomes harsh or delayed, or limp mode occurs; the controller may not be able to manage shifts reliably. Stop if the vehicle slips or fails to engage the selected range.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
