OBD-II fault code

P2800: Transmission Range Sensor B Circuit (PRNDL Input)

What it means

The TCM detects an invalid PRNDL signal pattern from transmission range sensor B. The selected gear position cannot be determined reliably from the B-channel.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Transmission range sensor B reports selector position to the transmission control unit through its PRNDL input channel. P2800 sets when the B-channel signal pattern is invalid, so the controller cannot reliably identify the selected range.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Range switch contact array failed
  2. Open or short in PRNDL wiring

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare the scan-tool range reading with the actual selector position when the fault occurs.
  2. With the vehicle secured, move the selector through its positions and note whether the B-channel reading is missing or shows an invalid pattern.
  3. Inspect the range switch contact array connector and PRNDL wiring for looseness, corrosion, damage, or a short.
  4. Check the B-channel supply, ground, and signal circuits for opens or shorts using the manufacturer’s wiring information.
  5. Test the range switch contacts through selector travel and compare the results with the manufacturer’s specification.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or clean a loose or corroded range sensor B connector.
  • Repair an open or short in the PRNDL wiring.
  • Replace the range switch if its contact array produces an invalid B-channel pattern.
  • Adjust the sensor only if testing shows its position is misaligned.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if the displayed range disagrees with the selector, shifts are erratic, or the transmission enters limp mode; the vehicle may not respond as expected. If it cannot identify Park or a drive range reliably, secure it and arrange repair before continuing.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
