What it means
The transmission range sensor reports a position that is implausible against vehicle speed and engine state. Often caused by sensor misadjustment or worn contacts.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The transmission range sensor reports the selected gear position so the control system can choose the correct gear and starting logic. P0706 sets when the reported range or its performance is implausible for the vehicle's operating state, such as a position signal that conflicts with speed or engine conditions.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Range sensor misadjusted
- Range sensor internally faulty
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and TCM codes, then note the vehicle speed, engine state, and reported range when P0706 set.
- Compare live range-sensor data with the selector position and dashboard indication through each gear, watching for delayed, erratic, or inconsistent changes.
- Inspect the range sensor connector, wiring, and selector linkage for corrosion, damage, looseness, or misalignment.
- Check sensor adjustment against the manufacturer's procedure, especially if the reported position is consistently offset from the selector.
- If adjustment and wiring are sound, test the sensor outputs across positions and assess whether worn contacts or a sensor fault puts readings outside the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Correct range-sensor or selector-linkage misadjustment.
- Clean and secure the range-sensor connector if contact is poor.
- Repair damaged wiring affecting the range signal.
- Replace a range sensor with worn or inconsistent contacts after confirming the circuit is sound.
- Repair a confirmed TCM input fault if sensor outputs reach the module correctly.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if the selected range and dashboard indication disagree, or if the transmission shifts unpredictably or enters limp mode. An implausible range signal can interfere with starting and gear control, so arrange diagnosis before relying on the vehicle.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
