OBD-II fault code

P070A: Transmission Fluid Level Sensor Circuit

What it means

The control module monitors the transmission fluid level sensor circuit. It sets this code when it detects an electrical fault in the circuit, such as an open or short, without specifying the exact cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The transmission fluid level sensor reports fluid level to the control module through an electrical circuit. P070A indicates an electrical problem in that circuit, such as an open or short, but does not identify which part has failed.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open or short in sensor wiring
  2. Failed fluid level sensor
  3. Poor connector contact or corrosion
  4. Fault in the sensor circuit

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check available live fluid-level sensor data for an absent or implausible reading.
  2. Check the transmission fluid level using the vehicle's prescribed procedure, since a circuit code does not confirm that the actual fluid level is correct.
  3. Inspect the fluid level sensor connector and harness for loose or corroded terminals, damaged insulation, or signs of fluid intrusion.
  4. Use the wiring diagram to check the sensor circuit for opens, shorts, and poor connections, then compare circuit readings with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the wiring and connector pass inspection, test the fluid level sensor and replace it only if it fails the specified checks.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure a loose or corroded fluid level sensor connector.
  • Repair an open, shorted, or damaged section of sensor wiring.
  • Replace a damaged connector or terminal that cannot maintain a reliable connection.
  • Replace the transmission fluid level sensor if it fails testing.

Can I keep driving?

Check the actual fluid level using the prescribed procedure before driving, and avoid driving if it is low or the transmission slips, shudders, or shifts abnormally. A faulty reading can hide low fluid, which may quickly worsen transmission damage.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
