What it means
Same as P070A with the signal in plausible range yet not matching the engine model.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The transmission fluid level sensor supplies a reading that the control module evaluates against the expected operating range. P070B sets when the signal is present but its value or behavior does not match what the module expects, which can result from sensor drift, circuit instability, or an actual fluid level that affects the reading.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Transmission fluid level sensor drift or failure
- Low or unstable sensor circuit voltage
- Poor connector contact or corroded terminals
- Incorrect fluid level affecting the sensor reading
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare live fluid-level sensor data with the conditions when the code set.
- Check the actual transmission fluid level using the vehicle's prescribed procedure and confirm the vehicle is positioned and prepared as required.
- Inspect the fluid level sensor connector and harness for corrosion, loose contacts, damaged insulation, or evidence of an unstable connection.
- Check the sensor circuit for unstable voltage or poor contact and compare readings with the manufacturer's specification.
- If fluid level and wiring check out, test the sensor for drift or an implausible response according to the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Correct the transmission fluid level using the specified fluid and procedure if it is outside the required range.
- Clean and secure corroded or loose sensor connector contacts.
- Repair unstable or damaged sensor wiring.
- Replace the fluid level sensor if it does not respond within the manufacturer's specification.
Can I keep driving?
Verify the actual fluid level before driving and avoid long trips until the inconsistent reading is explained. If the transmission slips, shudders, or shifts abnormally, stop driving because a genuinely low fluid level can cause rapid transmission damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
