What it means
Camshaft Position Sensor B Circuit Intermittent (Bank 2): the signal is intermittent or erratic. This relates to engine timing; a fault can cause rough running, a no-start, or timing errors.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Camshaft position sensor B reports the position of the B camshaft, commonly the exhaust cam, on bank 2. The engine control module watches for a steady signal that remains synchronized with engine speed and timing. This code sets when the signal drops out or becomes erratic, often because vibration affects a loose connector or damaged harness.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Intermittent connector
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
- Harness routed against vibrating component
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and review live bank 2 sensor B cam position data for dropouts or sudden jumps.
- Inspect the sensor connector and harness for loose terminals, corrosion, chafing, or contact with a vibrating or hot component.
- Check the sensor circuit’s power, ground, and signal connections using the wiring diagram and manufacturer’s procedure.
- With the engine safely off, move the harness and connector gently while monitoring the signal to see whether contact changes.
- If the wiring remains stable, test the sensor output and check that the sensor is securely mounted and cam timing is correct.
Common fixes
- Secure or reroute the harness so it does not rub against vibrating parts.
- Repair damaged wiring or loose connector terminals.
- Clean corrosion and restore a secure connection at the bank 2 sensor B connector.
- Replace sensor B on bank 2 if its signal still drops out with stable wiring.
- Correct a confirmed camshaft timing problem.
Can I keep driving?
Because the signal may cut out without warning, the engine may lose power, stall, or fail to restart; avoid driving if symptoms occur. Arrange repair promptly if the vehicle stalls in traffic.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
