What it means
Cam sensor B on bank 1 below lower plausibility — short to ground. The camshaft position sensor identifies which cylinder is on the compression stroke — without it the ECM cannot run sequential injection or coil-on-plug ignition correctly.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Camshaft Position Sensor B on bank 1 sends a position signal used by the engine control module to synchronize engine timing and injection. This code sets when the signal voltage falls below the expected range, often because the signal circuit is shorted to ground.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Short to ground
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Harness chafing through insulation
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and check live Sensor B readings on bank 1 to confirm the low signal occurs under the recorded conditions.
- Inspect the Sensor B connector and harness on bank 1 for corrosion, pushed-back pins, or insulation rubbed through to ground.
- Check the sensor's power and ground connections against the manufacturer's wiring information, where applicable.
- Test the signal wire for continuity and unwanted connection to ground, isolating the sensor and module as directed by the manufacturer's procedure.
- If the wiring passes, test Sensor B and its signal output against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Clean corroded connector terminals and restore a secure connection.
- Repair chafed wiring or a confirmed short to ground in the Sensor B signal circuit.
- Replace a damaged connector or pushed-back terminal.
- Replace Sensor B on bank 1 if it fails testing.
Can I keep driving?
A low Sensor B signal can cause rough running, stalling, or loss of power, so avoid long trips and stop if the engine stalls or runs severely unevenly. Continued driving may increase fuel use and emissions.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
