What it means
Camshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Intermittent (Bank 2): the signal is intermittent or erratic. This relates to engine timing; a fault can cause rough running, a no-start, or timing errors.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Camshaft Position Sensor A on bank 2 sends a timing signal to the engine control module, which compares it with the crankshaft signal. P0349 sets when that signal drops out or becomes erratic intermittently, often because a connector or harness loses contact with vibration.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Intermittent connector
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
- Harness routed against vibrating component
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and live camshaft/crankshaft signals for when the bank 2 Sensor A signal drops out.
- Inspect the bank 2 Sensor A connector and harness for loose pins, corrosion, chafing, or routing against a vibrating part.
- With the engine safely running, check whether gently moving the accessible harness changes the Sensor A signal or reproduces the fault.
- Test the connector and circuit for intermittent opens or poor contact using the manufacturer’s wiring information.
- If the wiring remains reliable, test bank 2 Sensor A for dropouts while cranking and running.
Common fixes
- Secure the bank 2 Sensor A connector and repair loose or corroded terminals.
- Repair chafed wiring and reroute or secure the harness away from vibration and heat.
- Replace bank 2 Camshaft Position Sensor A if it has intermittent signal dropouts during testing.
Can I keep driving?
A short, gentle drive may be possible if the engine is running evenly, but avoid situations where a stall would be dangerous. The intermittent signal can cause sudden rough running, power loss, or stalling, so stop if those symptoms occur.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
