OBD-II fault code

P0392: Camshaft Position Sensor B Circuit Low (Bank 2)

What it means

Cam sensor B on bank 2 below lower plausibility — short to ground. The camshaft position sensor identifies which cylinder is on the compression stroke — without it the ECM cannot run sequential injection or coil-on-plug ignition correctly.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Camshaft position sensor B reports the position of the B camshaft, commonly the exhaust cam, on bank 2. The engine control module monitors its signal to coordinate engine timing and operation. This code sets when the circuit signal falls below its expected level, which can result from a short to ground or a poor connection.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Short to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
  • Possible rough idle or stalling
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check live camshaft position and synchronization readings for sensor B on bank 2.
  2. Inspect the bank 2 sensor B connector and harness for chafing, moisture, corrosion, or a signal wire contacting ground.
  3. Using the wiring diagram, check the sensor circuit’s power and ground, then test whether the signal wire is shorted to ground as directed by the manufacturer.
  4. Check connector pin fit and circuit continuity while gently moving the harness to locate an intermittent short or high-resistance contact.
  5. If the wiring checks pass, test the sensor output and inspect camshaft timing before deciding whether the sensor has failed.

Common fixes

  • Repair the sensor B signal wire where it is shorted to ground.
  • Replace damaged or chafed harness sections.
  • Clean or repair corroded, loose, or pushed-back terminals at the bank 2 sensor connector.
  • Replace sensor B on bank 2 if its output remains low with a sound circuit.
  • Correct any confirmed camshaft timing fault.

Can I keep driving?

Power loss, rough running, stalling, or hard starting may occur, so avoid driving if the engine stalls or cannot keep up with traffic. A persistent timing-related running problem can increase fuel use and worsen engine performance.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
