OBD-II fault code

P0368: Camshaft Position Sensor B Circuit High (Bank 1)

What it means

Cam sensor B on bank 1 above upper plausibility — open signal or short to B+. The camshaft position sensor identifies which cylinder is on the compression stroke — without it the ECM cannot run sequential injection or coil-on-plug ignition correctly.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Camshaft Position Sensor B on bank 1 reports cam position so the engine control module can synchronize engine timing and injection. This code sets when the signal voltage is above the expected range, such as when the signal wire is open or shorted to battery voltage.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open signal line
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
  • Possible rough idle or stalling
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and review live Sensor B readings on bank 1 to confirm when the high signal appears.
  2. Inspect the sensor connector and harness for an open or loose signal connection, corrosion, pushed-back pins, or wiring pinched against a powered circuit.
  3. Use the manufacturer's wiring information to check Sensor B circuit power, ground, and signal connections.
  4. Test the signal wire for continuity and for an unwanted connection to battery voltage, isolating components according to the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the wiring checks out, test Sensor B's output against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect a loose Sensor B connector and clean corroded terminals.
  • Repair an open signal wire or wiring shorted to battery voltage.
  • Replace a damaged connector or terminal.
  • Replace Sensor B on bank 1 if it fails testing.

Can I keep driving?

Drive only as needed if the engine remains stable, and avoid high speeds or demanding acceleration; a faulty cam signal can lead to rough running, stalling, or power loss. Stop if the engine stalls or becomes unsafe to control.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
