What it means
Cam sensor B on bank 2 above upper plausibility — open signal or short to B+. The camshaft position sensor identifies which cylinder is on the compression stroke — without it the ECM cannot run sequential injection or coil-on-plug ignition correctly.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Camshaft position sensor B reports the position of the B camshaft, commonly the exhaust cam, on bank 2. The engine control module uses this signal with crankshaft position to coordinate engine timing. This code sets when the circuit signal is higher than expected, which can result from an open signal wire, a short to battery voltage, or a poor connector contact.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open signal line
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Supply wire pinched against B+ source
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and review live camshaft position and synchronization readings for bank 2 sensor B.
- Inspect the sensor connector and harness for an open wire, corrosion, loose pins, or wiring pinched against a battery-voltage feed.
- Use the wiring diagram to check the signal circuit for an open or unintended connection to battery voltage.
- Check terminal fit and circuit continuity while gently moving the harness, paying attention to bends and places where the wiring passes near power sources.
- If the circuit is intact, test the sensor signal and inspect camshaft timing using the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair an open signal wire or a short to battery voltage.
- Replace damaged harness sections where the wire is pinched or chafed.
- Clean or repair corroded, loose, or pushed-back connector terminals.
- Replace sensor B on bank 2 if its output remains high with a correctly wired circuit.
- Repair a confirmed camshaft timing fault.
Can I keep driving?
Power loss, rough running, or stalling can make driving unreliable; avoid long trips and stop if the engine stalls or loses substantial power. Continued incorrect camshaft information can worsen drivability and fuel consumption.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
