What it means
The bank 2 camshaft position sensor signal is present but does not match the crank reference correctly, or its pulse pattern is implausible.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Camshaft Position Sensor A on bank 2 provides a pulse pattern that the engine control module compares with the crankshaft position signal. P0346 sets when the signal is present but its timing or pattern falls outside the expected range, which can point to an intermittent sensor or a damaged reluctor wheel.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- CMP sensor intermittent
- Reluctor wheel damaged
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and camshaft/crankshaft live data for when the bank 2 Sensor A timing or pulse pattern became implausible.
- Inspect bank 2 Sensor A, its connector, wiring, and the visible reluctor area for looseness, damage, contamination, or chafing.
- Check the sensor connections and circuit against the manufacturer’s wiring information, especially for intermittent contact.
- Observe the bank 2 Sensor A waveform while cranking and running, and compare its timing with the crankshaft reference.
- If the circuit is sound, test the sensor and inspect the reluctor wheel for damage or misalignment before replacing parts.
Common fixes
- Secure the bank 2 Sensor A connector or repair damaged wiring causing intermittent contact.
- Replace bank 2 Camshaft Position Sensor A if its signal fails testing.
- Repair or replace a damaged or misaligned reluctor wheel as specified by the manufacturer.
Can I keep driving?
A gentle drive may be possible if the engine runs normally, but avoid hard acceleration because poor cam/crank synchronisation can cause power loss, rough running, or stalling. Arrange diagnosis soon, and stop if the engine stalls or struggles to restart.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
