What it means
Camshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Intermittent (Bank 1 or Single Sensor): the signal is intermittent or erratic. This relates to engine timing; a fault can cause rough running, a no-start, or timing errors.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Camshaft Position Sensor A on bank 1, or the single cam sensor on a one-bank engine, sends a position signal to the engine control module. This code means the signal sometimes becomes erratic or disappears, often when vibration moves a poor connector contact or damaged section of harness.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Intermittent connector
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
- Harness routed against vibrating component
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and review live Sensor A data for bank 1 to identify when the signal drops out and whether engine vibration or speed is involved.
- Inspect the Sensor A connector for corrosion, loose pins, or a fit that could lose contact under vibration.
- Trace the sensor harness and check for chafing, heat damage, or routing against a vibrating component.
- Monitor the signal while gently moving the connector and harness to locate an intermittent fault.
- If the wiring remains stable, test Sensor A and its circuit under the manufacturer's procedure and check for related crankshaft or VVT codes.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure an intermittent Sensor A connector.
- Repair damaged or chafed wiring in the bank 1 sensor circuit.
- Reroute or secure the harness away from a vibrating or hot component.
- Replace Sensor A on bank 1 if it intermittently fails the manufacturer's tests.
Can I keep driving?
Drive only as needed and avoid high-speed or heavy-load driving because an intermittent cam signal can cause power loss, rough running, or stalling. Stop if the engine stalls or becomes difficult to restart.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
