OBD-II fault code

P034B: Crankshaft Position Sensor - Crankshaft Direction Incorrect

What it means

The crankshaft is rotating in the wrong direction relative to the expected reference — typically only seen on stop-start systems where the engine briefly counter-rotates after shutdown.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The crankshaft position sensor reports crank rotation to the engine control module, which checks the direction of rotation against its expected reference. P034B sets when the detected direction is opposite to what the module expects, sometimes during brief backward rotation after shutdown on a stop-start system.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Engine briefly rotating backward after shutdown on a stop-start system
  2. Crankshaft position signal or reference fault

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Rough or delayed restart
  • Engine may fail to restart

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and the restart conditions to determine whether the code occurs just after shutdown or during a normal restart.
  2. Check whether rough or delayed restarting coincides with the code, especially on a stop-start vehicle.
  3. Inspect the crankshaft position sensor connector and harness for damage or poor contact.
  4. Watch crankshaft position and direction data during shutdown and restart to see whether the signal is stable and plausible.
  5. If the signal is sound but direction remains implausible, have the reference and stop-start behaviour checked using the manufacturer’s procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair loose or damaged crankshaft position sensor wiring or connector pins.
  • Replace the crankshaft position sensor if it fails the manufacturer’s signal checks.
  • Correct any crankshaft reference fault identified by testing.
  • Carry out any required manufacturer-specified calibration or relearn.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine restarts reliably and runs normally, a short local drive may be possible, but avoid relying on stop-start operation until the cause is understood. If it fails to restart or stalls, do not continue driving.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
