OBD-II fault code

P005A: B Camshaft Profile Control Circuit Performance/Stuck Off Bank 1

What it means

The control module detects that the Bank 1 B camshaft profile control is not performing as expected or is stuck off. The code does not by itself identify which cam or component is at fault.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Bank 1 B camshaft profile control changes the operating profile of the B camshaft, typically the exhaust camshaft. The control module compares the requested profile change with system feedback; P005A sets when Bank 1 B profile control does not respond as expected or appears stuck off, but the code alone does not identify the failed part.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Oil control valve stuck
  2. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
  3. Component wear with age - mechanical play

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
  • Possible rough idle or stalling
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and note engine speed, load, and temperature when the Bank 1 B profile fault occurred; scan for related cam timing or oil-pressure codes.
  2. Check the engine oil level and condition, since unsuitable or degraded oil can hinder the Bank 1 B profile-control mechanism.
  3. Inspect the Bank 1 B oil control valve connector and wiring, and look for leaks, sludge, or debris around the valve and its oil passages.
  4. Use a scan tool to command the Bank 1 B profile control, where supported, and compare the requested change with camshaft or profile feedback.
  5. If the valve and oil supply appear sound, follow the manufacturer's tests for the Bank 1 B locking or profile mechanism and check for mechanical wear.

Common fixes

  • Correct low oil level or replace oil that does not meet the manufacturer's requirements.
  • Repair a loose or damaged Bank 1 B oil-control-valve connector or wiring.
  • Clean or replace a sticking Bank 1 B oil control valve if testing confirms it is the cause.
  • Repair or replace a worn or debris-restricted Bank 1 B camshaft profile-control mechanism.

Can I keep driving?

Limit hard acceleration if power is reduced, and stop driving if the engine stalls, runs severely rough, or develops an oil-pressure warning. Continued operation with profile control stuck off can worsen drivability and fuel use.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
