OBD-II fault code

P005C: B Camshaft Profile Control Circuit Performance/Stuck Off Bank 2

What it means

The control module detects that the Bank 2 B camshaft profile control is not performing as expected or is stuck off. The code does not by itself identify which cam or component is at fault.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Bank 2 B camshaft profile control changes the operating profile of the B camshaft, typically the exhaust camshaft. The control module checks whether the requested profile change occurs; P005C sets when Bank 2 B profile control performs poorly or appears stuck off, but it does not by itself pinpoint the failed part.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Oil control valve stuck
  2. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
  3. Component wear with age - mechanical play

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
  • Possible rough idle or stalling
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and scan for related cam timing or oil-pressure codes to see when the Bank 2 B fault occurs and whether another system is involved.
  2. Check engine oil level and condition, since poor lubrication can restrict the Bank 2 B profile-control mechanism.
  3. Inspect the Bank 2 B oil control valve, its connector, and nearby wiring for debris, leaks, corrosion, or heat damage.
  4. Where supported, command the Bank 2 B profile change with a scan tool and compare the requested state with the camshaft or profile feedback.
  5. If the oil valve and circuit pass, follow the manufacturer's checks for restricted passages or wear in the Bank 2 B profile-control mechanism.

Common fixes

  • Correct low oil level or service oil that fails the manufacturer's requirements.
  • Repair a poor connector or damaged wiring at the Bank 2 B oil control valve.
  • Clean or replace the Bank 2 B oil control valve if it is confirmed to stick.
  • Repair or replace a worn or debris-restricted Bank 2 B camshaft profile-control mechanism.

Can I keep driving?

Drive gently if power is reduced, and avoid demanding acceleration until the fault is diagnosed. Stop if the engine stalls or runs severely rough, as continued operation can worsen drivability and fuel use.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
